A Dhaka court today (14 December) placed Mohammad Abdul Hannan, the owner of the motorcycle allegedly used in the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, on a three-day police remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order this evening after police produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand, according to court sources.

Hadi, an aspiring independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 13th National Parliamentary Election and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha, was critically injured in a shooting incident in the capital on Friday.

Public Prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, Omar Faruk Faruqi, along with Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman, argued in favour of the remand. No defence lawyer was present during the hearing.

According to the remand plea, the incident occurred on 12 December at around 2:24pm in front of Box Culvert Road under Paltan Model Police Station. Sharif Osman Hadi was shot and seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in critical condition.

CCTV footage from the area shows that Hadi was heading towards a battery-powered auto-rickshaw with another individual when two unidentified assailants wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire with the intention to kill him. Hadi sustained severe gunshot injuries in the attack.

After reviewing the CCTV footage, RAB-2 identified the motorcycle involved in the incident and traced its ownership to Abdul Hannan. Police said the case is currently under process, and Hannan was arrested on suspicion of involvement under Section 54 of the CrPC.

The remand application stated that further investigation is ongoing and custodial interrogation is necessary to verify the accused's involvement. It also mentioned that there is a risk of the accused absconding if released on bail and that further police remand may be required as the investigation progresses.

Abdul Hannan was detained from the Mohammadpur area of the capital on 13 December. During preliminary interrogation, he admitted that the motorcycle used in the incident belongs to him.
