NSU marks martyred intellectuals day with seminar
North South University (NSU) observed Martyred Intellectuals Day 2025 by organising a seminar at NSU Auditorium 801, paying tribute to the intellectuals who were killed during Bangladesh's War of Liberation.
The programme began with recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a minute's silence in memory of the martyrs.
Vice-Chancellor of NSU Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury delivered the welcome address, while Prof Salimullah Khan of the Department of History and Philosophy presented the keynote speech. The closing remarks were delivered by Prof Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (in charge) of NSU.
In his address, Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said the day was one of mourning and remembrance. He said the nation had lost some of its finest minds and noted that Bangladesh's progress might have been different had their contributions continued.
Prof Salimullah Khan spoke on the historical background and events leading up to 14 December 1971, offering insights into the political conditions of the time. He said the massacre of intellectuals remained a lasting trauma for the country and stressed the importance of understanding the historical truth behind Bangladesh's independence. He added that education must serve the purpose of making knowledge accessible to all citizens.
In his concluding remarks, Prof Abdur Rob Khan thanked Prof Salimullah Khan for his comprehensive discussion on the country's historical roots. He said the sacrifice of the intellectuals would always be remembered and honoured.
Earlier in the day, a delegation from North South University paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals by placing a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Rayer Bazar.
