A 14-year-old madrasa student committed suicide in Muksudpur, Gopalganj, after allegedly being raped by the director of the madrasa.
Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan Shikdar, 51, director of Ayesha Siddiqua Women's Madrasah and imam of the local mosque, has been accused of raping the teenager.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday. Villagers detained Mahmudul and beat him before police rescued him.
He is currently receiving treatment at Rajair Upazila Health Complex in Madaripur.
Mahmudul was named in a complaint filed by the victim's mother at Muksudpur Police Station. Teacher Khadija Begum was also accused as an accomplice.
The victim's mother told reporters that Mahmudul had asked her daughter to sweep his room after class, and he raped her with Khadija's assistance. The girl later confided in her mother but threatened suicide if the matter was disclosed.
Unable to bear the humiliation after the rest of the family learned of the incident, she took her own life, the mother said.
"I demand the maximum punishment -- death penalty -- for my daughter's rapist," the mother said.
Inspector Shital Chandra Pal of Muksudpur Police Station confirmed that the complaint had been received and a case was being filed. He said the body has been sent to Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital morgue for post-mortem, after which it will be handed over to the family.
Police confirmed that both Mahmudul and Khadija have been detained.
