A faction of BNP leaders and activists in Munshiganj on Thursday staged a protest demanding cancellation of the party's announced nomination for the Munshiganj-3 constituency (Sadar and Gazaria) and burned effigies of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party's nominated candidate, Md Kamaruzzaman Ratan.

The hour-long protest began in the evening at the supermarket area of Munshiganj town.

Followers of Mohammad Mohiuddin, district BNP's member-secretary and an aspirant for the Munshiganj-3 nomination, initiated the demonstration shortly after the announcement.

Protesters blocked the road from the city supermarket to the launch terminal by lighting fires, halting traffic for a significant period, before holding a brief rally at the Muktijuddho Sculpture Square.

Members of BNP-affiliated bodies, including Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Mohila Dal, joined the protest.

Mohiuddin told The Daily Star that grassroots workers were "frustrated" after the announcement. "Those who have been working tirelessly at the field level felt disheartened. We have requested them not to continue such activities," he said.

He added that the BNP acting chairman would be appealed to review the decision, noting that party leadership had earlier promised to evaluate those working on the ground.

Mohiuddin also criticised the timing of the announcement, saying it was "inappropriate" while BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was undergoing treatment. "Nomination was announced at such a moment when we were praying for her recovery," he said.

Earlier in the afternoon, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced Kamaruzzaman Ratan — central BNP's social welfare affairs secretary and former member-secretary of Munshiganj district BNP — as the party's candidate for Munshiganj-3.
