Police have recovered the bloodied bodies of a freedom fighter and his wife in Rangpur's Taraganj upazila.

The bodies were found in their home in Uttar Rahimapur village under Kursha union, said Taraganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Faiyum Talukdar.

The victims were identified as Jogesh Chandra Roy, 75, and Suvarna Roy, 65.

Locals said, this morning, as repeated calls went unanswered, neighbours climbed into the house using a ladder and discovered Jogesh's body in the dining room and his wife's body in the kitchen. The main door of the house was locked from the inside.

Police suspect that the double murder took place late last night.

The OC said, "Primarily, it appears that both were killed by blows to the head. Police and detective units have jointly begun investigations to identify those involved."

"The bodies have been sent to Rangpur Medical College morgue for autopsy," he added.

According to locals, Jogesh was a schoolteacher and retired in 2017. The couple lived in their village home.

Following the incident, Taraganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Monabber Hossain, and upazila Freedom Fighters' Council unit commander Ali Hossain visited the site.

"The killers must be identified and arrested within 24 hours. Otherwise, we will initiate a protest," Ali Hossain said.

The UNO said, "Instructions have been given to police to uncover the motive behind the killings."

The OC added, "We have not received any information suggesting that the couple had disputes with anyone. However, we are examining all possible angles with utmost seriousness."
