BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that a certain group is trying to create deep divisions in Bangladesh by using religion.

"There is an attempt underway to create a major path of division in the country. Bangladeshis are religious-minded people but do not support using religion to divide the state or society," Fakhrul said at an event held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka's Farmgate.

Referring to the 1971 Liberation War, he said its spirit was founded on the belief that people of all faiths would live together.

"The foundation of that war was a Bangladesh for everyone."

The BNP leader said the country was now at a turning point, claiming that after "15 years of fascist rule" an opportunity had emerged to return to democracy.

"Many obstacles have come and are still coming. Propaganda is being carried out against us. Campaigns and misinformation are being spread. A major wave of propaganda is underway, and we must counter it," he said.

Urging leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal to be active online, Fakhrul said, "If we cannot fight in the cyber world, we will lose. Young people must step forward. Chhatra Dal has a major challenge ahead to prove that BNP can build a prosperous Bangladesh."

He also referred to the illness of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, saying the party is going through a difficult time.

"We cannot remain at ease. Our leader is seriously ill and undergoing treatment at the hospital," he said, adding that all necessary arrangements had been made for her treatment.

He said the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman is personally overseeing the matter and that both local and foreign specialists are involved.
