The interim government convened its 50th meeting of the purchase committee, a key gatekeeper in state procurement, today.

"Perhaps two or three more meetings will take place before the election," Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said after a meeting of the cabinet committee on purchase.

He further highlighted that the cabinet committee on economic affairs has met 40 times since the interim government was sworn in in August last year.

He pointed to institutional weaknesses, citing the science laboratory board meeting held today—the first in seven years—as evidence of how governance lapses have accumulated.

"I think we have held the meetings satisfactorily. We have approved the proposals after a lot of scrutiny," he said.

At today's meeting, the purchase committee approved the import of 50,000 tonnes of rice at a price of $351.11 per tonne.

India-based Bagadiya Brothers Private Limited will supply the grains.

The committee also cleared a proposal to procure one cargo of liquefied natural gas from South Korea's Posco International Corporation at $9.99 per million British thermal units.
