Police recovered a bullet-hit body from a government health complex at Moulvibazar's Kulaura upazila on Thursday.
The victim was identified as Sukhiram Urang, 25, of Muroichhora tea garden area under Karmadha union, said police.
Locals alleged that he was shot by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along the border. But neither police nor Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) confirmed it.
Contacted, Lt Col ASM Zakaria, commanding officer (CO) of BGB-46 Battalion in Moulvibazar's Sreemangal upazila, said a team of three to four smugglers entered into Indian territory illegally to collect tobacco leaf at around 2:00pm near Muroichhora area.
They entered into around 200 metres area of Indian territory. Later, Sukhiram returned to Bangladesh with an injury on his back, he said.
Local people rescued him and took him to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex. He died at around 3:00pm while undergoing treatment at the health complex, he said.
However, the BGB official did not confirm the type of injury Sukhiram suffered and how he was injured.
Talking to The Daily Star, Kulaura Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Umor Faruq said on information, police rushed to the health complex and recovered a bullet-hit body.
The body will be sent to the Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal procedures are underway, he added.
Contacted, Kulaura Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Zakir Hossain said the man was shot and "we removed a bullet from his back."
