A clash broke out between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists at Kashem Bazar in Newazpur union in Noakhali Sadar around 5:00pm today, leaving at least 50 people injured.

Police and army personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, though tensions remain high in the area. Law enforcers have been deployed to prevent further violence, confirmed Sudharam Model Police Station OC Md Kamrul Islam.

According to Fazle Rabbi, publicity secretary of Noakhali district Chhatra Shibir, the conflict began after Jubo Dal (BNP's youth wing) activists allegedly attacked a Darsul Quran programme organised by Shibir on Saturday at Kashem Bazar Jame Mosque. In protest, Shibir arranged another Quran learning session at the same mosque after Asr prayers today. He alleged that BNP activists attacked again, locking Shibir activists inside the mosque and hitting them with bricks and bats, leaving 25 of them injured, including several senior Shibir leaders of the Noakhali unit.

Local BNP leaders, however, claimed that Shibir activists were conducting political activities inside the mosque and attacked when obstructed. They said 20 BNP activists were injured, with eight admitted to Noakhali General Hospital.

Md Jashim Uddin, general secretary of Noakhali Sadar upazila BNP, condemned the attack and demanded punishment for the perpetrators. On the other hand, Jamaat district Ameer Ishaq Khandkar accused BNP of obstructing religious activities.

Confirming the incident, Md Liyakat Akbar, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle), said that he is monitoring the situation from the spot.

Md Selim, in-charge of the Emergency Department at Noakhali General Hospital, reported that 36 people had been treated by 8:00pm tonight, with another 15–20 awaiting treatment.
