The bodies of 16 people who were burnt beyond recognition in a fire at a garment factory and an adjacent chemical warehouse in Rupnagar were handed over to their families last night following DNA confirmation.
The bodies had been kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
The handover began around 9:00pm and continued until 10:30pm, said Mokhlesur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Rupnagar Police Station.
"The forensic department of the Criminal Investigation Department provided police with the DNA test results of the 16 victims. Based on the matches, we contacted their families and handed the bodies over to them," the inspector said.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has provided Tk 25,000 to each family as burial assistance.
On October 14, a massive fire broke out at the chemical warehouse, which quickly spread to the multi-storey garment factory, killing 16 workers and injuring several others.
