A Detective Branch (DB) police constable was beaten by a group of ambulance drivers at the gate of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) last night around 11:50pm.

The injured constable was identified as Md Mostafa, a member of the DB North Division of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP). His relative Shahjahan was also injured in the attack.

According to police sources, Constable Mostafa had gone to the east gate of CMCH to rent an ambulance for transferring a hospitalised relative to another facility.

Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Solaiman told The Daily Star, "During an altercation over fare, some ambulance drivers attacked Constable Mostafa. Later, police conducted a raid at the scene and detained several individuals. Interrogation is underway."

The injured were given primary treatment at CMCH.

ADC (North) Md Sohel of CMP said preliminary investigation suggested that pharmacy employees, drivers, and brokers were also involved in the incident. "We have identified several individuals involved and are trying to arrest them," he added.

Following the assault, tension briefly spread around the hospital area, but police confirmed the situation was under control.
