Jamaat-e-Islami's Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan today said that despite the July uprising, "ghosts of partisanship" remain inside the government.
Speaking at a protest march at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, he said, "If any advisers, secretaries, election commissioners, or police officers want to act as 'party men', they should resign and take to the streets. Everyone knows what happened to those in the administration who acted as party stooges."
He cautioned the interim government that if partisan behaviour continues, people would again take to the streets as they did against the previous administration. Rafiqul Islam also expressed hope that Jamaat would see a "silent vote revolution" in the upcoming national elections, citing recent Rucsu polls where Shibir candidates secured victories.
In the absence of Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Rafiqul Islam delivered the chief guest's speech and reiterated the party's five-point demand, including a referendum on the July National Charter by November.
Other like-minded parties also staged rallies in Dhaka as part of the simultaneous movement. The Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party held a rally in front of the National Press Club at 3:00pm, followed by Khelafat Majlis and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) at 4:00pm. After Asr prayers, Islami Andolon Bangladesh joined the march at Baitul Mukarram.
At the Islami Andolon rally, Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad said, "After so much blood and sacrifice in July, there must be no chance for fascism to be restored. Therefore, the July Charter must be given a legal basis. A referendum must be held before the election."
JAGPA Vice-President Rashed Pradhan demanded the administration be freed of partisan influence, while Khelafat Majlis Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Sakhawat Hossain said elections would have no value unless the July Charter was legally implemented.
On Sunday, Khelafat Majlis Secretary General Ahmad Abdul Kader, speaking on behalf of Jamaat, Islami Andolon, and other allies, announced a three-day programme as the fourth phase of protests. Rallies will be held in divisional towns on October 25 and in district towns on October 27.
