Mahir Rahman, the prime suspect in the murder of Jagannath University student Jobayed Hossen, reportedly returned home with bloody hands around 6:00pm on Sunday.
Over the phone, Mahir's mother, Rekha Rahman, said her son came home on Sunday evening with injuries and blood on his hands. "He told me everything. I made arrangements for primary treatment and later took him to a hospital in Hasnabad, Keraniganj," she said.
"After receiving treatment for about three hours, I took him to Chawkbazar Police Station the next morning and handed him over to police," she said.
"My son was in a relationship with that girl [Jobayed's student Shabnam Barsha] for nine years. They grew up together and eventually developed a romantic bond," Rekha said. "But recently, the girl told my son that she no longer wanted to continue that relationship. She even introduced him to that boy [Jobayed]."
"That evening, while on his way to tuition, my son met the boy [Jobayed]. He asked Mahir to delete the girl's photos from his phone. According to Mahir, his friend Ilan was there as well. Mahir and the boy were talking inside the building while Ilan waited outside. At one point, an argument broke out between them, and during the scuffle, Jobayed was accidentally killed," she said.
"My son committed a crime, so I handed him over to police," the emotional mother said. "That boy [Jobayed] was also someone's son."
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Lalbagh Division, Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, confirmed that four people, including Barsha, have been detained in connection with the murder. "So far, we have arrested Barsha and three young men in a special drive. For investigation purposes, we are not disclosing their identities at this moment. A detailed briefing will be held tomorrow morning," he told reporters.
Jobayed Hossen, a student of the 2019–20 academic session in the Statistics Department at Jagannath University, was killed inside a building in Old Dhaka's Armanitola area around 4:45pm on Sunday. He was a convening committee member of the JnU unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
According to police, Jobayed had been tutoring Barsha for the past year at a house on Nur Box Lane in Armanitola, where he was murdered.
