Cases filed over the killings during the July uprising, except those already under trial at the International Crimes Tribunal, will be moved to the Speedy Trial Tribunal, the law ministry said yesterday.
A special committee has also been formed to ensure speedy and proper prosecution of serious offences, including murder, committed during the uprising, ministry spokesperson Md Rezaul Karim said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the newly formed committee, led by an additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division, will compile a complete list of cases filed over killings and other serious crimes during the July uprising and assess their current status. It will identify any obstacles to prosecution, excluding those under the International Crimes Tribunal, and recommend necessary actions to the government.
The committee will also keep affected families and the public informed of progress as investigations advance.
A total of 837 cases have so far been recorded nationwide, alleging that killings were carried out on the orders of the former Awami League government to suppress the mass protests. Of these, trials in 45 cases are currently underway at the ICT.
Police have submitted charge sheets in 19 murder cases across various courts.
These cases will now be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2000, the statement added.
