A man died in a hospital after being beaten by a mob outside his house over robbery allegations in Pirojpur's Kawkhali upazila early yesterday.

The deceased is Ali Hossain, 38, of Bandaghata area under Shialkathi village in Kawkhali, said police.

Ali's wife Sonia Akter said around 7:30pm on Sunday, a group of 50-60 people, led by a neighbour, gathered outside their house, shouting that Ali was a robber.

When he came out, the mob dragged him to a betel nut orchard next to the house and brutally beat him.

He was first taken to Kawkhali Upazila Health Complex with multiple injuries and later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he died at around 2:30am on Monday, said police quoting family members.

Sonia alleged that Ali had a longstanding dispute with his neighbour.

Khan Mohammad Abu Naser, superintendent of police in Pirojpur, said a case has been filed over the incident.
"Police have arrested one suspect in Kawkhali, while efforts are on to apprehend others," the SP said.
