Police have detained a female student in connection with the murder of Jagannath University (JnU) student Jobayed Ahmed in Old Dhaka's Armanitola area.

According to police sources, the detainee was one of Jobayed's students.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said a drive is underway to detain others involved in the incident.

Confirming the development around 11:00pm, Mallick Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of DMP's Lalbagh Division, said, "We have detained one suspect. Several police teams are actively working to arrest the others."

"Primarily, we suspect that he was stabbed to death. Everyone in the building is being questioned," he added.

CCTV footage obtained by The Daily Star shows two young men wearing black T-shirts and carrying black backpacks running toward Bangshal Road from the Mokta area on Nurbox Road around 4:39pm. Police believe they might be involved in the killing.

Around 4:30pm yesterday, Jobayed was stabbed in front of a building on Nurbox Road when he went there for private tuition. Witnesses said he tried to climb the stairs after being attacked but collapsed on the third floor, where he died on the spot.

Following the incident, over a thousand JnU students blocked Tatibazar intersection, demanding justice for Jobayed's murder. Around midnight, they took position in front of Bangshal Police Station.

Jobayed was a postgraduate student at the Department of Statistics of Jagannath University.

Mehedi Hasan Himel, convener of the JnU Chhatra Dal unit, said, "Jobayed was involved in student politics and was a member of the university unit's convening committee. He was murdered. We demand exemplary punishment for those involved."
