The victim, Rasel Mia, 31, is a constable of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He was in plain clothes at the time of the incident.
The attack took place around 5:30am when Rasel was heading to his office in Malibagh from his residence in Rais Nagar area of Kadamtali on a motorcycle to attend a training session.
A group of three to four muggers intercepted him near Rayerbagh under Jatrabari Police Station and tried to snatch his wallet and mobile phone. When he resisted, the attackers stabbed him in his left arm and took away his belongings before fleeing.
Locals rescued Rasel and first took him to Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh. Later, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment.
