Police have recovered the body of a university student from the Outer Ring Road area in Chattogram.
The victim was identified as Shamim Masud Khan, 26.
Shamim, originally from Barishal district, was a former student of the CSE department at AIUB and was pursuing an MBA degree (evening) at Chittagong University (CU). He lived with his parents in the Barapol area in Bandar, Chattogram.
Locals first spotted him around 3:00pm on Sunday beside a bush near the Outer Ring Road, bleeding profusely with the tendons of his hands and feet severed.
He was taken to a local private hospital by Halishahar police before being shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
Bandar Police Station Sub-Inspector Monirul Karim said Shamim was still alive when police first found him. "He was lying in a pool of blood with the tendons in his hands and feet severed. We are investigating both possibilities -- whether it was suicide or murder," he told reporters.
Family members said Shamim had left home around noon on Sunday after receiving a phone call. He told his mother he was going to meet someone, mentioning a job interview.
Responding to a 999 call, Halishahar police initially rushed to the scene, assuming it was within their jurisdiction. However, they later handed the case over to Bandar Police Station after a preliminary inquiry.
The victim's cousin, Md Maruf, told The Daily Star, "Shamim was the eldest among three siblings. We are shocked by the incident. We want a proper investigation."
He added that the filing of a case in this regard was underway.
